Top Ten Tips for… Employers Accessing Apprenticeship Opportunities

Apprenticeships have become one of the most effective ways for employers to build skilled workforces, but many organisations may be unsure where to begin.

This article explores key tips for employers looking to access apprenticeship opportunities to maximise available support and create meaningful pathways for employees.

  1.    1. Start with your skills gap
  2. Don’t recruit an apprentice just because funding exists. Be clear about the roles, skills shortages and future talent needs you want apprenticeships to solve.
  1.    2. Understand the funding rules early
  2. Apprenticeships are funded differently depending on your size, levy status and location. Knowing what you can claim (and what you must contribute) avoids nasty surprises later.
  1.    3. Choose the right apprenticeship standard
  2. Standards vary in length, level, and content. Pick one that genuinely fits the job role rather than trying to squeeze a role into an unsuitable framework.
  1.    4. Work with a quality training provider
  2. A good provider makes everything easier including recruitment, paperwork, delivery and compliance. Look at the provider’s sector experience.
  1.    5. Plan the off-the-job training properly
  2. Apprentices must complete off-the-job learning. Build this into workloads and rotas from day one so it supports productivity rather than disrupting it.
  1.    6. Get line managers on board
Apprentices succeed when managers understand the programme, their responsibilities and the long-term value of developing talent in-house.
  1.    7. Use apprenticeships for upskilling existing staff
  2. Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers. They are a powerful way to develop current employees into higher-skilled or leadership roles.
  1.    8. Recruit for attitude, not just experience
  2. Especially for entry-level roles, focus on motivation, curiosity and cultural fit. Technical skills can be taught; commitment can’t.
  1.    9. Build progression routes beyond completion
  2. Apprentices are more engaged when they can see what comes next e.g., permanent roles, higher-level apprenticeships, or clear career pathways.
  1.    10. Measure impact, not just completion
  2. Track retention, performance, productivity, and return on investment. Strong data helps you refine your approach and justify future apprenticeship investment.
