Top Ten Tips for… Growing your Skills
Summer often brings a chance of pace, which makes it a great time to reflect on your progress and refresh your skills. Whether you’re an apprentice, people professional, or an employer investing in your team, learning now can have a big impact later.
Here are some of our tips to prioritise your skills this summer…
- 1. Set a ‘summer learning goal’
Choose one skill you want to improve in the next couple of months. Keeping goals focused and achievable will help you stay motivated, and having a clear goal gives your development direction.
- 2. Make learning part of your routine
You don’t need to spend hours studying each day. Even 15 minutes of reading, reflecting or practicing a skill can help you make progress. Small, consistent learning can have the biggest impact.
- 3. Listen and learn on the go
Podcasts and webinars are a great way to develop knowledge and stay up to date on industry trends while you’re out and about. Use quieter moments to explore ideas and topics and hear different perspectives from other people professionals.
- 4. Ask for feedback
Feedback from peers is one of the best ways to understand your strengths and identify areas for development. It’s important to see feedback as a guide and not criticism. Asking for regular feedback can also help you improve your confidence.
- 5. Connect with people
Sharing ideas with colleagues, peers and other people professionals can lead to new opportunities for learning and development. Networking also allows you to exchange experiences and learn from the successes of others.
- 6. Practice your communication skills
Communication is valuable in every role. Practice asking questions and explaining your ideas or new learning. Effective communication helps build confidence and stronger working relationships.
- 7. Learn from everyday experiences
Workplace challenges can be great learning opportunities. Take time at the end of the day or week to reflect on what went well or what you might do differently going forward.
- 8. Apply the skill in real scenarios
The best learning happens when you put your knowledge into practice. Look for opportunities to volunteer for a project or take on a new responsibility that helps you develop a skill.
- 9. Look after your wellbeing
Rest and recovery are essential parts of personal growth. Taking breaks can help you come back with better focus and more energy. Looking after yourself and knowing when to take a break is just as important.
- 10. Keep track of your progress
Create a log to record new things you’ve learned, how you implemented the skill, and the feedback you received. Looking back on your progress helps you recognise achievements and identify your next learning goal.
