Top Ten Tips for… New Year Workplace Planning

The start of a new year is an important time to plan ahead. Effective planning helps organisations set clear priorities and support their team for the months ahead.

By taking a structured and proactive approach, organisations can improve engagement and productivity while ensuring teams feel ready to handle tasks.

  1.    1. Review your plan

Reviewing your plan means taking time to look at existing goals and actions before moving forward. This helps identify what needs updating and what could be stopped altogether. A review helps ensure that the organisation is responding to current priorities.

  1.    2. Identify skills gaps

Identifying skill gaps involves assessing whether employees have the right knowledge and capabilities to meet future goals and objectives. This could be leadership, digital or technical skills or soft skills such as communication. Understanding any gaps allows organisations to plan relevant training.

  1.    3. Review policies and procedures

Policies and procedures should be reviewed regularly to ensure they are compliant, clear and still fit for purpose. This includes areas such as use of IT, health and safety, and ED&I. Regular reviews help maintain consistency and compliance across the organisation.

  1.    4. Plan key milestones

Planning key milestones involves scheduling in important activities such as performance reviews, engagement surveys and feedback sessions well in advance. This provides structure to the year, supports employee development and ensures progress can be reviewed on a regular basis, which is crucial for development.

  1.    5. Assess wellbeing initiatives

Assessing wellbeing initiatives means evaluating whether existing support measures are effective and accessible to all staff. This could include flexible working options, mental health resources and wellbeing programmes. Reviewing these initiatives ensures they meet employee needs and contribute to effective and sustainable performance.

  1.    6. Set clear communication plans

A communication plan outlines what information will be shared, when it will be communicated and through which channels. A clear plan reduces confusion, ensures consistent messaging and helps employees understand priorities and changes throughout the year.

  1.    7. Review feedback and data

Taking time to review employee feedback, such as engagement surveys and informal feedback, provides a valuable insight into how employees are feeling in the workplace. This information can highlight strengths to build on and issues that may need attention. This demonstrates that your employees’ thoughts are valued and help shape bigger decisions.

  1.    8. Plan training and development activities

Planning training and development activities ensures employees have opportunities to grow and develop throughout the year. This could include formal training, coaching or mentoring. A structured approach supports individual career development as well as organisational capability.

  1.    9. Prioritise workload balance

Prioritising workload balance gives employees manageable workloads and realistic deadlines. This helps prevent burnout, supports long term productivity and boosts overall morale. It also encourages better resource allocation and promotes healthier ways of working.

  1.    10. Audit technology and systems

Review tools and platforms employees use daily to ensure they are effective and still fit for purpose. This helps to identify outdated systems and highlights possible training needs. Well-functioning technology supports productivity and collaboration and improve satisfaction.
