CIPD Foundation Certificate in Learning and Development
Who is the programme aimed at?
The Certificate and Diploma in Learning and Development are benchmark qualifications for Learning and Development Specialists and Trainers. They are suitable for aspiring and existing Trainers and those needing a recognised qualification in Learning and Development essentials.

Once you have completed your qualification, you will also be awarded Associate level membership of CIPD to enhance your professional credibility in the workplace and to potential employers.
What units will I study?
The units you will study are set out below. Each unit carries a number of credits and to achieve the Certificate you need to complete all units to achieve 26 credits.

How will the programme be delivered?
For the work-based programme, you will be allocated an Assessor to work with you throughout. To achieve the units you will undertake a range of activities including gathering work-based evidence, completing assignments, and writing personal statements; there are no exams to take.
The taught programme is delivered over 8 months at our Head Office in Doncaster, close to Robin Hood Airport. Lunch and refreshments are included and there are hotel facilities close by if needed. The programme format is designed to minimise the amount of time that you need to be away from your workplace, requiring you to attend full-day or half-day workshops once a month.
You will be provided with a core text book and an on-line resource site as well as comprehensive support material given to learners at each workshop. We keep our group numbers small so that you get the support and attention you require. You will also be given the opportunity to attend Guided Learning days to work on your assignments and supporting activities, as well as accessing tutorial support.
What is the duration of the programme?
The duration depends on your chosen study mode:
- Work-based – up to 12 months
- Taught – 8 months
How will the qualification be assessed?
Assessment will be by a range of activities including assignments; there are no exams to take.
How can I progress further?
On completion of this qualification, you will be offered the opportunity to top-up to the Foundation Diploma in Learning and Development by studying additional units, or to undertake one of our Intermediate or Advanced qualifications in Learning and Development.
